#RES16 #INSPIRATION Designing for Vinyl. When Peter Saville was told that New Order planned to call their 1983 album Power, Corruption and Lies he scoured the National Gallery in London for a suitably imposing portrait of a demonic Renaissance prince. Having decided that the idea was trite, he bought some postcards in the museum shop, including one of Henri Fantin- Latour's 1890 painting A basket of Roses, "flowers suggested the means with which power, corruption and lies infiltrated our lives," he said. "They're seductive." Saville juxtaposed the painting with something that seemed at the time to be searingly contemporary: the colourful shapes on floppy disks, spelling out the names of the band, album and tracks in a code based on the colours. The hitch was persuading the National Gallery to allow New Order to use the image. Tony Wilson who ran their label Factory Records managed to get through to the director and asked "Sir, whose painting is this?" "It belongs to the people of Britain", the director replied. "I believe that the people want it," said Wilson. " If you put it like that Mr Wilson," said the director. "I'm sure we can make an exception."
