Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi/@thephotosociety | German WWI soldiers found refuge from the violence of the front line in this hayloft on the second floor of a large 17th century brick barn in Picardy, France. The farm has been owned by the same French family for centuries. We climbed a handmade wooden ladder to reach the hayloft that could have been designed in the 17th century. There were numerous emotional drawings lefts on the interior walls of the barn.

The drawing is one of my personal favorites. I feel that the soldier is looking right through me though this drawing is a century old. I also get the feeling that he is telling us that he was an ordinary human being caught in a horrific, life-and-death struggle.
