During #Ramadan, which begins Wednesday evening, the world’s Muslim communities are unified by one food: the date. It is one of the earliest cultivated crops and an ancient icon of the Middle East, where the thick-trunked date palm is a symbol of hospitality, rest and peace. Dates are a fixture of iftar, the fast-breaking meal that is eaten every night after sunset. They provide a quick boost of energy for additional eating to come. “An iftar without dates would feel very strange to all the Muslims I know,” said Yvonne Maffei of @myhalalkitchen. “It would be like Thanksgiving without a turkey: The table doesn’t look right without it.” @amydickerson_photographs shot this date palm for @nytfood on a farm in Thermal, California.
