The Greek hero #Heracles (Roman #Hercules), mythical founder of the Olympic Games, was the ultimate athlete and hero. Son of the god Zeus and mortal woman Alcmene, his fortitude demonstrated that men could become immortal like gods. According to legend, Heracles founded the Olympic Games to celebrate the last of his 12 labours – the cleansing of the cattle stables of King Augeas, whose palace was situated near Olympia. Heracles is said to have set the length of the stadium at just over 192 metres, the distance he could run in one breath. During the Roman period guilds of professional athletes were formed, adopting him as their patron. Heracles rose in the supernatural world to reside among the Olympian gods.
Heracles is shown here with the muscled physique of a professional boxer, of a kind developed and admired in the later Greek period (c. 323–31 BC). The hero has accomplished his final labour and holds three of the golden apples guarded by a giant serpent and the Hesperides nymphs. The serpent snakes around the tree behind him. These apples were the source of the gods’ eternal youth and Heracles’ own passport to immortal life.
