Nat Geo editor @kristinromey combines two of her favorite things—archaeology and dogs—to talk about the amazing history of the xoloitzcuintli and why they often pop up in celebrations for Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

“These hairless dogs were believed to guide people on their voyage to the underworld thousands of years ago,” she says, “and we’ve found plenty of pots in the shape of xolos in ancient burials from western Mexico. Xolos were nearly eaten to extinction by Spanish conquistadors, but today they’re enjoying a revival as the national dog of Mexico. (Frida Kahlo was a big fan.) Fun facts about these hairless dogs: Like people, they need sunscreen, and they get zits.”
