She used to bring me to university in Ireland when I was a toddler. I would sit in lectures on zoology and microbiology and listen. She tells a story about how I once tried to take a book on genetics out of the university library. The alarm was going off, and I’m this little toddler trying to tell the librarian that she just needs to scan the book so I can leave with it.    Later on, when I was in school, I found out that if you were studying zoology, you had to sketch the animals — and I am terrible at art. But I realized I was good at microbiology. I was interested in infections and how people got sick. It was fascinating — almost like zoology in terms of understanding this other sort of world. And that led me to where I am today, leading Abbott’s infectious disease research group.    As the head of the Abbott Pandemic Defense Coalition, I ensure our scientists and partners around the world are actively involved, with our sleeves rolled up, doing the work to understand how viruses are changing. If we find something new, we do the heavy lifting to understand the threat.
