#HondaHeritage With the recent announcement that the SCL500 is headed to U.S. customers, let's take a look back at Honda's original "scrambler"-style motorcycles--the 1962 250cc CL72 and the 1965 305cc CL77 (pictured here). Powered by a kickstart parallel-twin engine based on that of the CB77 Super Hawk, the CL77 was known for its decently sporty handling and impressive reliability. It had an off-road-focused chassis and a long, flat saddle. The CL77 was nicknamed the "gentleman's scrambler" because it was really more road-focused, although its 250cc predecessor can be credited with pioneering the legendary Baja 1000, as a pair of units were piloted by Dave Ekins and Bill Robertson Jr. down the length of the Mexican peninsula in a 1962 Honda publicity campaign. (The first official race was five years later.) Whatever the case, the CL77 sold quite well for three years, when it was replaced by a 350cc version.
